The selection process for PAUSAW National Teams is thorough and involves the review of multiple factors. In recent years, Pennsylvania USA Wrestling has brought multiple teams in each age division, and the continued growth of wrestling across Pennsylvania has led to a significant increase in both interest and the depth of talent applying for these opportunities. As a result, the selection process has become increasingly competitive, and many deserving athletes may be considered for a limited number of roster spots.
Selections are made through a collaborative review process involving the age division directors, team leadership, other PAUSAW leaders, and National Team coaches. The committee considers a broad range of information in order to evaluate each applicant as completely as possible. This includes (but is not limited to) competitive results, experience, performance against strong competition, recent development, versatility across weight classes, and other relevant factors that help determine overall readiness for national dual team participation.
While past performance is certainly one part of the evaluation, team selection is not based solely on statistics or any single result. The process is intended to be holistic and may also take into account qualities such as willingness to compete in both Freestyle and Greco, competitiveness, coachability, attitude, maturity, and how an athlete presents as a representative of Team PA. In cases where athletes are closely matched, the committee may consult additional coaches and trusted evaluators to help inform the decision.
Because of the strength of wrestling in Pennsylvania, there will inevitably be difficult decisions, and some very talented athletes may not be selected to one of the teams in their age division. Even being considered for Team PA reflects a high level of accomplishment. We appreciate every athlete who applies and the hard work that goes into reaching this point, and we encourage all wrestlers to continue developing and pursuing future opportunities to represent Pennsylvania on the national stage.
